March is National Nutrition Month! The theme this year is “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right.” There are many ways to eat healthy without having to give up the foods and tastes you enjoy. You don’t need to give up your favorite foods to eat healthy, just portion wisely and eat them less frequently.

When you have a meal, make sure at least half your plate is made up of fruits and vegetables. Try replacing your favorite items with low fat alternatives. For instance, instead of Whole or 2% Milk, try Fat-Free or 1%. Also try to find foods low in sodium. Swap out sugary drinks like soda for water.

While eating healthy can cost a bit more, here are some tips to save money in the long run.

  • Make a list. This allows you to get exactly what you need without any extras along the way.
  • Don’t shop hungry. Cliché but true. When you’re hungry, you are more likely to buy something unhealthy along the way.
  • Shop fresh items along the perimeter of the store. Find fresh healthy fruits, vegetables, and meats.
  • Shop the season. When fruits are in season, they tend to be cheaper. So shop for the fruits and vegetables in season for the best deals.
  • Don’t be afraid of store brands. Generics can save you money and are often the same thing.
  • Bulk can save. Buy in bulk because it can save you money in the end.
