While the weather may still be chilly up north, the sunny Florida weather allows teams to dust off the cobwebs and get into shape prior to Opening Day on April 3rd.

While Hot Springs, Arkansas was the birthplace of Spring Training, teams since the early 1900’s have flocked to various parts of Florida and Arizona for this annual ritual. Although Clearwater used to be the Spring Training home for the Brooklyn Dodgers and Cleveland Indians, Clearwater’s sole team is the Philadelphia Phillies. Nearby teams include:

Since watching baseball games can often entail eating copious amounts of hot dogs and drinking a hefty volume of beer, it may be in your best interests to be mindful of your health while down at Spring Training. If you’re in Clearwater to catch the final games of Spring Training, follow these tips to help in shape during the week:

Hydrate

With Florida’s humidity, sunshine, and high temperatures, it’s easy to get dehydrated – even during March. With temperatures typically hovering around 80° during Spring Training, overheating is a common condition during this time as well, often as a result of not drinking enough water.

Drinking beer, which naturally dehydrates the body, can contribute to overheating as well, especially out in the bleachers, where the sun’s rays are magnified against the medal. Therefore, try to space out your alcoholic beverages with a bottle of water. This will prevent you from getting dehydrated or over intoxicated.

Be Mindful of Your Eating

Eating a hot dog or pretzel during a baseball game is as American of a tradition as they get. Unfortunately, this paired with a couple beers adds up to a lot of empty calories. While we’re not going to tell you to refrain from this, as we enjoy this American tradition too, what we recommend is practing exceptionally healthy eating and dietary habits while you’re not at the baseball game.

So if you’re going to an early afternoon baseball game, make sure your breakfast and dinner are comprised of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. This will ensure that your body gets the nutrients it needs while you’re enjoying your Spring Training retreat.
